The bases of person-centred working are warm personal regard, the belief that the client has the solution within herself/himself, and congruence (genuineness and empathy rather than sympathy). All Salix's work is based on these principles but our work in Individual Carers' Support is our most obvious example of practical person-centredness.
We are able to offer regular (usually weekly, but sometimes less frequent) appointments, in person or by telephone. The client always speaks to the same worker.
Issues which are regularly worked with are:
- guilty feelings when a person with dementia has gone into 24 hour care
- feelings of bereavement after a death
- difficulties encountered when the person with dementia is resident in 24 hr care
- matters around abuse
- matters around relationships (new and old)
- issues around dementia within a marital relationship.
