Golden Years Rock

Golden Years Rock is a music project for people with dementia in Care Homes.

Salix is most keen to have a variety of participants, not just people with mild to moderate dementia; or those with the same diagnosis, e.g. all Alzheimer's Disease or all Stroke-related dementia. The ideal group would contain men and women and have people in a range of ages. The best size for the group is 8 people but we usually recruit 10-12 to allow for people to decide they do not want to be involved. It should be noted that any person who was not given the 6CIT in week one cannot be counted in the number of participants, although we are happy for them to be in the group if they wish.

The Project lasts for 10 weeks and operates on the same day and at the same time each week. It is timed to take one and a half hours, including time for tea at the end. Workers will take tea with the group.

The first session is a short one - with different sorts of music playing and observation of participants, and conversation with them on what sorts of music they like. The music for this session should be very wide-ranging. Those people who are able to do so will, with a worker, complete the 6CIT (Six Item Cognitive Test). This will give us a baseline to assess improvement/decline at the end of 10 weeks.

After the first week, sessions last one and a half hours and include listening to recorded music, playing percussion, dancing, chatting and working with soft balls, coloured, scented objects and the parachute. Workers bring all equipment and music with them.

The last session is again a short one where workers engage in conversation with clients whilst music plays and workers complete the 6CIT with clients.
Each week, before the group starts, Salix workers will have a short meeting with Home staff and take a report from the aftermath of the previous session. Detailed notes will be made of this feedback on the group. These, together with test scores will be used in the final report as outcomes. Names will be changed to preserve confidentiality.

We hope to obtain sufficient grant funding to offer Golden Years Rock without cost to the Care Home taking part.
